ANNA STARED HARD at the phone. Ever since her brief conversation with Camilla about Aurora and what was going on at Arsenal, Anna had been getting more and more stressed about what was happening without her there. She could call Aurora, explain the situation and put the woman’s mind to rest. Or she could just call Andrew Boyer and threaten his life if he screwed this up. That would be very satisfying.

She picked up the phone to call Aurora. And quickly hung up. If Camilla found out she had called, she would be in serious trouble. On the other hand, Anna had a vital stake in the future of Arsenal, a future that she believed banked almost entirely on Goddess Sportswear and the contract she had spent the past six months of her life sweating over.

With that little nudge of righteous indignation, she picked up the phone and called Aurora Milan’s number.

“Goddess Sportswear,” the receptionist answered coolly.

“Aurora Milan,” Anna said trying to disguise her voice an octave lower, which she recognized as pretty stupid. But these were desperate times.

“She’s in a meeting, can I take a message?”

Shit, Anna hadn’t anticipated that. “Uh…no thanks,” she stammered and hung up.

She flopped back onto her couch and stared up at her ceiling. She needed something to distract her from this mess. She looked at her watch. Sam was teaching little kids basketball at the Y and Marie was no doubt sanding floors or sewing curtains or something equally unpleasant—Anna wanted nothing to do with that. She looked around her spotless apartment. Since getting the cleaning woman she couldn’t even distract herself with her own filth.

Anna chewed on the nail of her middle finger.

She had been prepared to play by Camilla’s rules and stay out of things for six months. Anything to get her job back. Anything for Arsenal. But surely if Aurora was getting upset, Anna had obligations to get involved.

She called her assistant, Jen. But she wasn’t there. Anna couldn’t stop herself and so to prevent a complete breakdown, she called Camilla’s assistant, Emily. It was a risk, but the woman knew everything that happened at Arsenal and she was easily bought. Like any good hustler, which Emily was in her heart of hearts, she kept her mouth zipped when there was something in it for her. Anna already owed the woman a month of meals at Marie’s, what was another month?

“Camilla Lockhart’s office.”

“Emily?” Anna whispered.

“I’m sorry, I can’t hear you.”

“Emily,” she said in a louder voice.

There was a pause, then Emily started whispering, “You could get into a lot of trouble calling here, Anna.”

“Yeah, I know, but what’s going on there? Where’s Jen?”

“She gets a month paid vacation for having put up with you for so long.”

Anna gasped, outraged. Then shocked. Then she grimaced. There had been a lot of late nights and a lot of irrational runs to get more peanut butter cups. The girl deserved some time off. “Okay. That makes sense,” she told Emily. “But what’s going on with Aurora at Goddess.
